Here is Stephan's Expert 53.
1. What Genre Of Photography Do You Specialise In?
I consider myself a perpetual learner and I hate calling myself a specialist on anything; that being said, my favourite styles of photography are Street and Documentary photography. I truly enjoy capturing the real, daily life, that so often ends up being obscured by more popular subjects such as landmarks and landscapes. This is not to say that I won't switch to my XF18mm f/2 for a landscape shot, but this is more the exception and not the rule.
2. Why Do You Like Using The XF35mm Lenses?
It's part of me now; I can frame a scene with this focal length in my mind. Somehow the ~50mm equivalent is to me the focal length I enjoy the most as it gives me the right balance between scene compression and all-round capabilities for a wider shot, or even the odd city/land/seascape. Besides the obvious point of the focal length, I find the optical capabilities of the XF35mm F/1.4 to be exceptional and versatile. I know it will have the right level of sharpness and subject isolation wide-open and I can trust it inherently at f/4-f/8 for my street photography.
3. What Do You Like Photographing The Best With Your XF35mm Lens/Lenses?
Difficult to pinpoint with this focal range. If I were to be asked this for the XF56mm, I would certainly be hard pressed to answer anything but portrait. The XF35mm lenses are so versatile that they could be used in almost all types of photography (except specialised genres such as Macro or Wildlife photography). I feel right at home in a busy street with my XF35mm f/1.4, and I am certain I can rely on it to capture cherishable memories with it when visiting a new city/country.
Why your choice?
My choice was made very simple as I bought into the system when the X-Pro1 came out. It was my first lens in the Fuji system, and it's still my most used one. I went with the XF35mm as I was the happiest and most comfortable with my Canon 50mm 1.4 when I used to shoot with my 5D.
4. Do You Shoot Professionally With The XF35mm Lenses?
Photography is not my main source of income, and whilst I have shot some Fashion photography (with a street feel, as it's my main area of focus) I take on very few photoshoots due to time constraints and the fact that I enjoy being 100% in charge of what I shoot. I have sold prints of my Street photos taken with the XF35mm f/1.4.
5. Fuji XF35mm F/1.4 Or Fuji XF35 f/2? Why Your Choice?
XF35mm f/1.4. Although I have just placed an order for the XF35mm f/2.
Why Your Choice?
Since I already addressed the reason behind my f/1.4 choice, I'll cover why I just added the f/2 to my arsenal!
Gear Acquisition Syndrome,? Probably, but more importantly because of my main hobby. I am a high altitude alpinist and I try to, schedule in an expedition to climb a mountain every year or so. I have, in the past, taken my X-Pro1/XF35mm f/1.4 along, and to my surprise it has managed to keep up with truly extreme conditions such as a 4 hour heavy blizzard at 6200m in the Himalayas. The shutter did freeze overnight as we spent the evening in a tent in Advanced Base Camp in Mera Peak at 6100m and -30ºC.
Having said this, I am looking forward to being able to use a fully WR kit with my new X-Pro2 and not worry as much as I did with the non WR combo. I also look forward to the blazing fast AF performance for my Street photography work.
6. How Often Do You Reach For Your XF35mm Lens/Lenses?
Its my default. Its the lens that I start off with - the other lenses might come out for specific shots, but many times I just take my XF35mm f/1.4.
7. Could You Live With Just An XF35mm Lens In Your Photography Bag?
Absolutely. I could. My gear-hungry fingers wouldn't be able to, but I certainly have and will again.
8. Do You Like To Use Available Light Or Studio Light With Your XF35mm Lens/Lenses?
9. What Fuji-X Camera Body Do You Prefer To Use The XF35mm Lenses On? Why Your Choice?
I started with the X-Pro1 and I have now moved to the X-Pro2.
Why Your Choice?
I absolutely love the OVF and Rangefinder-like experience. I love to remain part of the scene whilst I frame my shot (and in my expeditions, it is sometimes important for safety reasons!)
10.Do You Have Any Favourite Photographs Using The XF35mm Lenses?
Absolutely. Interestingly, and to reinforce my first answer - all of these are Street photos!
11.Finish This Line: The Fuji XF35mm Lenses Are…
…the mechanical counterpart to my eyes.
